Procedures for Reporting Missing Persons

What should you do if you think that a friend or family member has gone missing? Immediately make a report to the nearest police station, once the necessary checks have been made. These include contacting the person’s:

• family
• friends
• neighbours
• employer

Information Required

To expedite the process, it is best to have the following information at hand when reporting a missing person to the police:

• Name and alias
• A recent full-length photograph with visible facial features. If there is no photograph available, the police will assist in developing a composite photograph
• Date/time/place last seen
• A detailed description (height, weight, colour of hair, distinguishing marks such as tattoos, scars and/or birthmarks), description of what they were last seen wearing
• Places frequently visited and his/her associates

An assigned officer will begin investigations after receiving a signed comprehensive statement of circumstances surrounding the individual’s disappearance. The missing person’s, photo and other relevant details will then be posted on the website of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

Where necessary, the police will seek public assistance in locating the missing person. An Ananada Alert is issued if the person is a minor and various stakeholders will be mobilised to publicise information about the case.
